Cooking and Style: Feeling Salty and Sweet

Hello,

I think it is really interesting where our food taste preferences derive from. From a young girl, I was always craving sweets whereas my husband has always been interested in things slightly more salty.

As a gift to me, my sister brought back this gorgeous wooden and glass cabinet filled with 24 glass jars of different flavoured salts from around the world - see image below.

Even though I am not the biggest salt person fan, these salts are actually for putting on your dish right at the end as a tasting - rather than cooking with. I love the idea and concept and my mind went into overdrive!

Salt is used in so many aspects of our cooking especially to enhance another flavour. It can come to some people as quite a shock to hear that salt is used in many chocolate recipes to enhance the taste.

my homemade macarons - the middle one is a salted caramel filling which really transpired the flavour.

It really got me thinking about different applications of salt and I have collected some images for you to look at enjoy.

Something Sweet and Salty

Gorgeous chocolate macarons with a salt garnish

Yummmmm

Have you heard of himalayan rock salt? Check out the slabs below which are used as cooking and feature pieces...It's also really pretty to grind up and have in a small dish alongside some cracked pepper. The colours just look really elegant and really pretty.

I think I am in heaven when I see fish like this!! The detail and care in this is really gorgeous.

I love this - a Himalayan Rock Slab of Salt used to serve this dish.

I love the colours and concept on the above picture. It just looks so dainty and feminine to me.

Cocktails anyone?

My brother in-law has been making way too many of these lately, but how can I resist?

I love the image below of the salt and pepper grinders - they look so organic and natural.

I love these little salt dishes - I am always captivated by homewares from our history.

Are you feeling for something salty or sweet?
